Better Business Bureau Hosts Most Successful ‘Secure Your ID’ Day

BBB Event Draws Largest Crowd on Record for ID Theft Prevention and Recycling Efforts
May 07, 2014

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) Serving Eastern Michigan and its partners Cintas and Global Electric Electronic Processing (GEEP), Fox2 and Greenpath Debt Solutions today announced their most successful ‘Secure Your ID’ Day event, held on April 26, 2014. The event was the largest in history for BBB of Eastern Michigan.

More than 1300 cars packed the BBB parking lot to take advantage of document destruction and electronics recycling services - helping to protect them from potential identity theft while also protecting the environment.

Being certain that private, sensitive documents are managed in a safe and protected manner is imperative as ID theft has become the fastest growing crime in the world. In fact, ID theft has risen from roughly 500,000 victims in 2012 to more than 1.3 million victims in 2013, making this event essential to the security of local citizens.

Consumers also generously donated funds to the BBB Educational Foundation that funds many consumer facing programs such as the Senior Scene, LifeSmarts Teen Challenge and BBB Military Line®.

Overall, the BBB hosted event saw the following results:

  • 1,315 cars served
  • $2,140 donated to the BBB Educational Foundation
  • 42,590 pounds/21 tons of paper shredded by Cintas
  • 20,000 pounds electronic waste recycled by GEEP

In addition, document shredding at the event saved the equivalent of:

  • 362 trees
  • 64 cubic yards of landfill
  • 43 barrels of oil
  • 149,065 gallons of water

“I attended this event for the first time and I want to say hats off to your whole team for a first class job. I truly appreciate the service you performed and the friendly and organized way you provided it. I can’t say enough about this event. Bottom line – job well done to your staff,” stated a Secure Your ID attendee.

The Better Business Bureau of Eastern Michigan will host its next ‘Secure Your ID’ Day shred event on October 11, 2014. Please visit our calendar for other upcoming BBB events at .
