The scam is called the "One Ring" scam and the scammer hopes people are just curious enough to call back the number.
Scammers use a programmed computer to call multiple, random cell phone numbers all at once and then hang up after just one ring. If the call is returned, they're charged $19.95 for an international call fee and a $9 per minute charge after that. Officials say music is played and sometimes an advertisement to make charges rack up.
Those who have responded to the calls say they come from the Caribbean, including Grenada, Antigua, Jamaica and the Virgin Islands.
If you believe you've been a victim of this scam, contact your cell phone provider immediately. No complaints have been filed in the mid-Michigan area, however, officials say the scam is spreading across the country.
