Laugh Yourself Through Life

January 20, 2011

Are you feeling stressed and worn out by the end of the day? How many times did you laugh today? I bet your answer is, “Not a lot.” Studies show children laugh or smile 400 times a day. Cut that number down to 15 times for most people over 35! No wonder you are dragging.

When you consider that a robust laugh lowers your blood pressure below normal resting rates for 45 minutes, exercises the lungs, increases oxygen in the bloodstream and increases your endorphins, we are missing out on a good thing when we get older.

We don’t have to be so stodgy. Let’s work on laughing and smiling. It’ll “buy” you points at work. Here’s how according to Paul E. McGhee, Ph.D.

  1. Humor improves employee morale. You can do it in your e-mails, your conversations, and in your body language. We have an employee who keeps her e-mails upbeat and fun. She lightens our day. I’ m told my son keeps them laughing at a Ford plastics plant where he is an industrial engineer. Hmmm… an engineer who writes light-hearted, funny e-mails. Go figure!
  2. Humor strengthens team spirit and builds cohesive groups. If people are having fun they are going to want to be together and get things done.
  3. Humor boosts creativity. Studies show that people with a sense of humor tend to be more creative.
  4. Humor helps emotional intelligence. It’s been proven that people who have emotional intelligence are generally more successful than people who have a high I.Q. Because people with good emotional intelligence are good at managing their emotions and others, they are good at getting people to “step up” and get things done.
  5. Humor boosts sales. People connect with you and your product and/or service if you put them in a good mood.
  6. Humor helps with managing people. It helps with rapport and communication, reduces tension, reduces burnout, builds resilience, and much more.
Staying light hearted, smiling and laughing does make sense. Take note of how much you smile and laugh. Then, work on increasing how often you imbibe in humor.

Form a fun committee and work on humor and fun times for your entire office. Retention and productivity will increase. Have fun smiling!

How do you keep your office smiling?
