If there is a local inventors' club or society, it may be able to provide you with the experiences of its club members. The Small Business Administration's booklet, "Can You Make Money With Your Idea or Invention?" is available from an SBA district office or The Small Business Administration, Office of Public Communications, 1441 L Street, N.W., Washington, DC 20416; (202) 653-6365. The SBA recommends that, "If you elect to use an idea promotion firm, make sure: They can provide solid evidence of their track record-not just a few flashy success stories, but verifiable statistics on the number of clients they've had & the number who have actually made money. They will provide you with samples of their promotional materials & lists of companies to whom they've sent it. (Then check with those companies yourself)"
