BBB Reaches Milestone of Pioneering Services in Spanish

January 13, 2014

DENVER – The Better Business Bureau of Denver/Boulder announced today the 10-year anniversary of when it became one of the first BBBs in the nation to offer its full range of free services in Spanish. Hiring bilingual staff and completely translating all print and online information was a pivotal moment for the nonprofit and its Spanish-speaking community.

“Language barriers cause more vulnerability to fraud and unethical practices so it was essential for us to spearhead the accommodation of BBB services to our Spanish-speaking community ten years ago,” said Su Hawk, president and CEO for the BBB of Denver/Boulder.

Launching all of its services in Spanish in 2004 was an ambitious task and was made possible by support from former Colorado Attorney General and recent former U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar. “It’s good to see the BBB continuing its great work in ‘protecting consumers and legitimate businesses,’ which was always my goal as Attorney General,” said Salazar.

The BBB’s bilingual services have thrived during the last 10 years and the organization has become well known as a resource among Spanish speakers. Since 2004, the BBB of Denver/Boulder has helped with hundreds of calls and marketplace disputes from Spanish speakers, and provided countless pieces of information translated into Spanish.

The initiation and successful implementation of the BBB’s Spanish-language services won the organization a national award in 2004, the BBB Marshall A. Mott Award, and set an example for other BBBs and nonprofits to follow. The BBB of Denver/Boulder has since helped other BBBs develop bilingual services for their local communities.

Not only has the expansion helped Spanish-speaking consumers, it has established relationships with Spanish-speaking business owners. With the assistance of bilingual staff, many businesses received best-practices education and earned BBB Accreditation. The BBB has also partnered with various local organizations to serve as a resource for the Spanish-speaking marketplace.
