If I could write a review that is less than one star, I would. If I could file suit against Bershire with any hope of recovery, I would. However, since I can't, one star it is. It has taken me years to decide to write this and required that my tax issues finally be sorted. I think they are, though nothing would surprise me at this point. The disaster that is Berkshire has taken me about 10 years of fighting with the IRS to get sorted. Berkshire allegedly had it sorted in 2012 and blew it. Then, they were at a loss to help and all the while kept asking for more money, which if I had, I would have been able to pay my taxes. But I paid Berkshire thousands and thousands of dollars. In 2012 I hired Berkshire to assist with a tax collection on a fairly substantial amount of taxes owed. I run a business that requires payment of estimates. At the time (in 2009/2010/2011/2012) a series of events occurred beginning with my sister's death, a personal cancer scare, and culminating in my parents' death that were distracting, at best. As such the estimates were not paid. Our estimates did not get paid and when it came time to pay the taxes, there was simply no money. It had not been squandered or pilfered. It had been used to bury my sister, pay medical bills, deal with family matters fix a home destroyed by 2 storms (Sandy and Irene) and other issues. Berkshire put us together with Greg, someone on their team and he gave us some possibilities and their perceived outcomes. We began with a series of payment plans. All along we paid the fees monthly and days before it was set to expire, the payment plan was denied. That happened over the course of about 30 months. We would pay the payment amount to the IRS and months would go by and they would deny the payment plan. It was only recently that I was advised that until you have a payment plan, making monthly payment is not the way to go. Berkshire gave us lousy advice and we struggled to pay our bills at the time and for years afterwards since at the end of the day, we had nothing agreed with the IRS. In and around 2011 my business market had fallen apart. At the time, an OIC seemed viable. In 2012/2013, Greg managed to secure an OIC but on the day it was supposed to be signed, Greg missed a scheduled conference call. The OIC officer had given us a deadline, which I knew nothing about and instead of speaking with him, Greg missed the deadline. We lost the OIC. Moreover, an attempt at eliciting the assistance of the office within the IRS - taxpayer relief - led to nothing. Greg had messed up on a huge scale and we were effectively screwed. But Berkshire kept demanding payments from us to "assist" in rectifying the situation. Then, suddenly, Greg was gone. I knew nothing about his departure from Berkshire. No one advised me he was leaving. Months went by and I had effectively been ghosted. Then one day I get a call from someone explaining that Greg had left and my file somehow fell through the cracks. They wanted additional money to sort it out, so desperate as I was, I paid the money. The next two years went by without any relief from Berkshire, no headway at all. I kept getting letters from the IRS, liens on the house, additional liens. I liquidated retirement accounts, at the advice of Berkshire to pay some of the money - all information I was later told was wrong. In the end, in 2014 I gave up on them. I tried paying small amounts to the IRS in the hopes that I would somehow be able to sort it out. Meanwhile I did keep everything up to date. It was the earlier years that hung over my head. In 2018, the IRS emptied out bank accounts and put a lien on my business and in the end, I hired a criminal tax attorney who charged me a single fee to work with me. I probably did not need someone who focuses on crimes but I had been pursued by the IRS like a criminal and thought I needed someone who I could work with. He asked for too little to sort it out; but never ever kept requiring more money. Dissimilarly Berkshire kept asking for additional payments during the years they were retained. A few thousand here, a few thousand there. The tax attorney explained that until I had a working agreement, I should not have paid the payment plan because there really was not one. He explained that I should not have liquidated retirement accounts because of the penalties and interest. He explained that the forms submitted to the IRS by Berkshire may have done me no favors. It has taken 10 years + to undo the mistakes of Berkshire, their carelessness and deal with the penalties and interest that accrued since. It has taken me 10 years to recover from the damage they caused and I do not recommend them to anyone. I would say that if you are having problems, what starts with a few thousands to lure you in will become many thousands very quickly. Hire someone who gives you a number and sticks to it. There was, indeed, a single person who helped me from Berkshire after Greg's departure and I am thinking she felt terribly but never told me just how bad the situation was. She still asked for more money at the behest of her bosses. In my experience, Berkshire will drain you dry and it will be lucky if you get what you pay for. HIRE A LAWYER. DON'T HIRE BERKSHIRE. IN FACT, RUN THE OTHER WAY!
