Zoola (originally Rainbow Rewards) launched in Metro Denver in October 2004 and is a sophisticated cash back rewards program.
The business model involves merchants combining to offer their goods and services to the registered members of Zoola. When consumers register on the Zoola web site, they are promised a specific percentage cash back when they buy from the listed merchants. The Zoola member has the option of receiving their accumulated cash back as a check or direct deposit. They also have the option of donating their accumulated cash back to a local charity.
The participating merchant pays Zoola a "total rewards fee " which includes the member's cash back portion plus a 4% administrative fee. Zoola administers the member's cash back portion and keeps the administration fee for their business operating costs, co-operative advertising with the merchants, and payments to their sponsors/beneficiaries.
