BBB Letter Grade Scale
Star Rating scale
BBB Customer Review Rating plus BBB Rating is not a guarantee of a business' reliability or performance, and BBB recommends that consumers consider a business' BBB Rating and Customer Review Rating in addition to all other available information about the business. If the BBB Rating is NR then only Customer Reviews are used for the Star Rating.

Complaint: I contacted Controlling Systems in September 2015 for a furnace tuning, cleaning, and safety inspection. The technician arrived on time and started working promptly. Fifteen minutes later, he told me the inducer gasket was missing a part and that the heat exchanger was "purplish in color" due to overheating. He did not tune or clean the furnace, but provided an estimate for a new furnace and left a few minutes later after accepting payment. He also explained the hazards of even the smallest carbon monoxide leak potentially associated with the furnace issues he identified. I felt that his explanation was a scare tactic used to sell a new furnace. I called my home warranty company the next day, as they would cover this kind of issue. Their HVAC affiliate sent a service technician out two days later, who concluded the Controlling Systems tech was incorrect, that the inducer motor gasket was not missing a part or faulty and that the heat exchanger was not overheated. I then got a third opinion from a Dr. Fix-It technician the following week, who also found no fault with the furnace parts the Controlling Systems technician identified. I called Controlling Systems to express my concerns with the inspection, spoke with the owner, and received a laundry list of possible explanations for his employee's diagnosis in addition to a promise to refund my charges and have a service manager follow up with me. During our conversation, he told me he would have the tech fired (who had been an employee for about year) if he found out there was any wrongdoing, to which I said I was not looking to cause anyone to lose their job but to report what I felt was a bogus inspection. I did not receive a follow-up phone call or a refund.
Desired Settlement: I would like Controlling Systems to reimburse me the amount of the service call: $89.
Business Response: Mr ***** is exactly correct. I did make that promise and failed to deliver. I mailed him a refund check last week for $89 and we did in fact cut ties with the service technician we had sent to his home.
