Colorado Youth at Risk
Colorado Youth at Risk empowers teenage students to make life choices that positively impact their future through community-based mentoring and intensive training.
Incorporated: 1992 in CO
CYAR has three primary delivery programs for at-risk youth in the greater Denver area. #1: Steps Ahead - the organization's "signature" delivery is a one year intensive community-based mentoring program for at-risk ninth graders attending Manual, George Washington, East and Aurora Central high schools. CYAR is equipped with quality mentors who undergo rigorous training in order to better support the 14-15 year old at-risk youth. As well, each cohort starts with an intense 4-day mountain Launch Course followed up with monthly structured workshops for the cohort of mentors and youth; and one-on-one mentoring. Steps Ahead is specifically designed to support youth who are at risk of dropping out of school when they are most vulnerable, that is, in the ninth grade. And then it provides more services to see them through to graduation. #2 Touchstone - is a program for 10th through 12th graders that support the youth that have completed Steps Ahead. This program focuses on maintaining and expanding for the youth the fundamental skills they have learned in year #1, providing them with a safe, but real environment to use these skills as they plan for their future. Touchstone focuses on grades, graduation, college preparation, interviewing skills, tutoring and career development projects. Real Talk is a new pilot, for-credit course for Manual High School students not already involved with CYAR. It uses the CYAR core curriculum as the basis for course delivery
