BBB Presents Community Honor To The Dayton Foundation
May 01, 2013

DAYTON, OHIO, April 2, 2013 - Today, your Better Business Bureau is pleased to announce The Dayton Foundation will be honored with your BBB’s third annual Community Honor Award. This highly-regarded organization will receive the distinguished honor at your BBB’s Eclipse Integrity Awards on Tuesday, May 14 at David H. Ponitz Sinclair Center, 444 W. Third St., Bldg. 12, Dayton.

In 2011, your Better Business Bureau created the Community Honor Award, which was established to honor an organization with a proven commitment to improving all aspects of life in the Miami Valley. It spotlights the honoree’s efforts to realize not only its own mission, but its role in making the Miami Valley a thriving community, taking care of its citizens – individuals and organizations. The honoree enhances the Miami Valley marketplace by offering its own tangible and intangible resources, making a positive impact on the evolution of the Miami Valley and the betterment of its people and industries. It demonstrates a passion for and progress towards improving the quality of life. This honor is reserved for an organization, which has shown stamina, steadfast determination and truly innovative ways of giving back to the community.

The Dayton Foundation, founded in 1921, was one of the first community foundations in the nation. Since its founding, the Foundation’s more than 3,000 donors from all walks of life have made possible the awarding of over 225,000 grants to charities, totaling over a half-billion dollars. Today, it consistently ranks among the top 40 of nearly 800 community foundations nationwide for grant dollars awarded, assets under management and incoming gifts. It’s second among these foundations for the number of charitable funds under management and the number of grants awarded.

The foundation provides unmatched services, resources, support and counsel to help individuals achieve their charitable giving goals and create a stronger community. It also assists nonprofits by funding their efforts and offering expertise to help them be more effective. In addition, it helps build a better community by promoting collaboration and identifying important issues, bringing people and organizations together to solve them. For example, The Dayton Foundation has played a key role in the creation of The Job Center, the building of the Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center, RiverScape, the founding of the Minority Economic Development Council (now known as the Minority Business Partnership) and Dayton Crayons to Classroom, as well as the merger of three Dayton performing arts groups into the Dayton Performing Arts Alliance, and other efforts. The Dayton Foundation actively supports such organizations as Learn to Earn Dayton and Junior Leadership Dayton, among many other organizations and efforts, and has helped lead the nation in community foundation specialized giving vehicles such as the private foundation alternative Family Foundation Plus, and in the creation of the African-American Community Fund and The Disability Foundation, to name a few.

John North, president and CEO of the BBB serving Dayton and the Miami Valley, shared, “The Dayton Foundation is a well-respected organization in our community, always looking for ways to help take the Miami Valley to the next level.
