DAYTON, OHIO, October 14, 2011— Last week, representatives from your Better Business Bureau of Dayton/Miami Valley, Inc. attended the Council of Better Business Bureaus’ Assembly of Better Business Bureaus in Seattle, Washington. The organization was honored with four awards recognizing local efforts with programs, investigations and volume of businesses becoming BBB Accredited.
Today, more than 100 BBBs serve the U.S. and Canada. These BBBs are divided up into seven categories based on number of businesses in a BBB’s service area (number of businesses as supplied by the U.S. Census Bureau). Your BBB serving Dayton and the Miami Valley lead the pack in its category. It’s had the most businesses become Accredited between August 1, 2010 and July 31, 2011 - a record-breaking year for your BBB. It brought home from Assembly two awards recognizing this honor. This is a good indication business is thriving in our community.
Your BBB was also recognized with an award for its new Girl Scout program, sponsored by Day Air Credit Union, Inc., Smart Choices In Life & Business, which was a free, day-long program for area Girl Scouts, our future consumers and business leaders. The course addressed financial literacy issues, as well as career/business/leadership topics. It provided a unique sponsorship opportunity for the organization. About 150 girl scouts of all ages - ranging from Daisies to Seniors - participated in the program this past spring. The judges stated this program and its specific course content was “intriguing,” “innovative in its approach” and “took the BBB and its Accredited Business sponsor directly into the lives of young consumers.”
In addition, your BBB was honored for the investigation it conducted regarding FBN Construction. Your BBB discovered scam artists were using the name of FBN Construction, one of its Accredited Businesses, to establish a Web site that was collecting banking and other personal information from people they were allegedly hiring. In this case, the Accredited Business didn’t even know the company’s identity had been stolen and used to defraud people. Instead of merely explaining to the company what it should do to protect itself, your BBB immediately launched an investigation and worked with contacts to have the scam company’s phones shut down. Through their investigation, BBB staff discovered a similar scam was operating in another BBB’s service area and was able to notify that BBB and work with them in their investigations. The judges stated “this BBB’s plan of action was organized and an example of how a BBB can go the extra mile to do what others believe they cannot do.”
Joan Swenson, BBB board chair, says, “Our local BBB has been and continues to be a national leader. The organization’s team is passionate about the organization’s mission and is dedicated to making our marketplace a better place for us all. There is no better time to support this organization as more and more businesses are embracing BBB Accreditation and putting it to work to enhance their own efforts. Kudos to the entire team for these national honors.”
John North, BBB president and CEO, says, “It was exciting to be in Seattle among our peers in the BBB system and accept these awards on behalf of our local BBB. These honors are a great example of the phenomenal initiatives taking place in the Miami Valley. Your BBB will continue to maximize its efforts and strive to set the bar for other BBBs across the US and Canada, demonstrating our BBB’s value to the marketplace, through our mission of advancing marketplace trust.”
