Complaint Category: Failure to correct billing errors

Complaint: No longer wish to rent their water softener - they keep billing me
I purchased my home in 2002. I agreed to keep paying the rent on the softener which was already here. No idea how long it had been here before. It is old & outdated. In June 2012 (10 yrs later after faithfully paying $17.12 each month), I called Alpha requesting they come & get it. I no longer wish to rent this from them. They were to call back. In July, I got another ****** & again called. Same in August. Last time I spoke to someone, he said he wasn't even supposed to be working. He was to be off because he just had back surgery, but said he would call back. He didn't! So, I just started mailing their "past due" bills back along with all the information I have just given you. The last ****** I mailed back, I asked if anyone could read??? Obviously not, because they still haven't called back. But today I received another PAST DUE ****** along with a threat of being turned over to collection! I am not under any contract to rent this thing the rest of my life! I have been trying to get it out of my house since June! No one ****** help me. I feel I have done all I can do. I did leave another message at 4:50 today. It said their business hours were til 5, but again, no one responded. At one time, I even offered just to settle & send a check to pay it off & make it mine. Again no response. Obviously they ****** make more collecting $17.10/month for 10+ years then they would to sell it outright. I am very upset. I would never rent from them again. But most importantly, they have NO RIGHT to turn me over to collection!

Consumer's Final Response
I spoke with ******** today finally. They are selling me the water softener for $226.11. This should resolve the problem. To be sure I understand correctly, this will terminate the rental agreement & I will own the water softener. I have sent the check off in today's mail. Sorry for involving the BBB, but I felt I had no other solution. No one ever responded to any correspondence or returned my phone calls until I left a msg saying that I had contacted the BBB. Thank you! ***************
