Before paying advance fees of several hundreds to thousands of dollars for help in changing jobs, consider exactly what services the company offers. Most career counseling contracts do not guarantee specific employment, despite any verbal assurances. In evaluating these services, make sure a clear explanation of fees, the time period of the contract, services to be performed, client obligations, and any guarantee or refund provisions are in writing. Ask to see materials prepared for previous clients, and ask for client references. Do not sign a contract under pressure and be skeptical of exaggerated claims of success or obtainable salaries.
(Some states regulate career counseling firms much like regular employment agencies, requiring licensing and bonding and prohibiting advance fees, among other things.)
EMPLOYMENT SERVICES - State of Ohio licenses, approves contract, and fixes maximum fee for employment services. Fees for Job Search programs are for the services provided. Fees are not contigent upon the client's obtaining a job. Understand and keep a copy of the contract which should include all costs, conditions for repayment if any, cancellation provisions if any, and any oral promises. Fill in all blanks before signing.
