Complaint
I took my daughter's computer tower in for an evaluation on why it wouldn't boot up. I was charged $72 for a misdiagnosis of a bad motherboard.
Around Aug 18th I took my daughters computer tower in for an evaluation of the problem it had with failing to boot up. She attends ****** ***** and needs a computer for her course work. I was told I'd be called when a diagnosis had been made. Four or five days later when I had not been called, I called 5 O'Clock Computers to see if it had ben evaluated. After several minutes on hold I was then told the computer had a bad mother-board.

Upon further inquiry, I was told I could buy a device from them for approximately $30 to transfer the information from the hard drive that would make it easier to move the information to a new computer. I was given a price of approximately $550 for a new computer, which I declined. I picked up the computer that afternoon and paid the diagnostic fee. I also inquired about having a DVD copied that was made by **** ****** and consisted of super 8 home movies of my children when they were very small. I was told this was not possible because the DVD was copyrighted.

I took that DVD to **** ****** a week later to have the copy made and was told it could have been done anywhere because the DVD and material was NOT copyrighted as it consisted of my family members and was video that I had taken. After learning of this "lie," I had my youngest granddaughter's father look at the computer in question as he works in this field. He took the hard drive from the computer and put it in another computer to run a malware, spyware cleaner on it. After cleaning the hard drive, he reinstalled it back into the computer that had been examined at 5 O'Clock Computers and it booted up and worked wonderfully. He stated there was nothing wrong with the motherboard, the hard drive needed cleaned off.

I called 5 O'Clock Computers on 3 Sept 2013 to express my dissatisfaction on both matters and was told, "It must have been the capacitors in the computer that were defective." I corrected the individual on the phone (he had pulled up my information as they keep a record of all repairs and diagnoses)and told him I was TOLD . . . "The mothrboard is bad." There was no mention of any capacitors. He stated because the computer turned back on, it must have been just luck because it shouldn't have worked. I replied that's **** because it's still working.

I stated I'd like a refund on their misdiagnosis. He said this was not possible without returning the computer to their store so they could evaluate it . . . I have no intention of driving to Vandalia and returning it to Beavercreek, leaving my daughter without her computer for a week or more while thy fiddle **** around and come up with more nonsense. They simply didn't look at the computer to begin with; I called to find out what was wrong with it; they left me on hold for a period of time to come up with an answer; charged me when I picked it up knowing full well their answer was incorrect. They didn't want to deal with me when I inquired about having a DVD copied. I may not be a computer genius, but I've patronized this store in the past and trust the technicians to treat those less knowledgable (electronics) with respect and honesty. I see this is no longer the case with this business and I will never return. I will tell everyone I know about how much this business has changed and NOT for the better.

Desired Settlement
I' like a refund for their mis-diagnosis.

Received the complaint and will refund Ms. ***** ***** the refund the charge on our invoice XXXXXX. Sorry to hear that she had a bad experience. My staff is extremely careful and we are very fair in our charges.
