On March 5th, my brother was visiting our 97-year old father. He went to basement and discovered water heater was leaking from the top and water was running down the sides and on to the floor.. He contacted Thomaston Comfort Control. My brother was leaving to head back to *** ********* where he resides The serviceman came to my father's after my brother left; but spoke with him on the phone and said the water heater needed to be replaced, because it was corroded. My brother questioned him about it, but he insisted it was corroded, they never provided an estimate and went ahead and installed new water heater to the turn of $5,400, which seemed extremely high. When we asked for a detailed invoice, they would not provide one. My brother called and spoke with manager, about it, and he said they never provide detailed invoices. My brother told him that it seemed very high, and that my father is 97 years old, and a vet and asked if he could do anything about the cost. He said he would take off $400 (the amount of the sales tax). I have researched pricing online for the exact same model water heater that they installed. The highest price I found was a little over $1,700. We were told that they charge somewhere around $160 for labor per hour. The invoice indicated that the serviceman was there for 3 hours which would be $480. There was some copper piping installed, along with a gas shut off to bring up to code. But where's the remaining $2,000 plus come from? Something is wrong!! And when a business is not willing to provide a detailed invoice, then I know they are hiding something and ripping people off. Shame on them for doing this to a 97 year-old WWII veteran whose health is failing and requires daily home aides to care for him.
