BBB has received a pattern of consumer complaints alleging that North American Power and Gas (NAP)'s advertising and telemarketing representatives misrepresented the savings customers would receive when switching from their current electric or gas service providers to NAP services.

Other complaints alleged that NAP telemarketers failed to properly identify themselves as NAP representatives in order to deceptively switch consumers from their current electric service to NAP's service.

BBB brought these matters to the attention of NAP in October, 2012, asking the company to address the underlying causes of said complaints. Although NAP responded, stating that its policies prohibit misrepresentation of its services by NAP representatives, similar complaints continue to be received by BBB.

On March 5, 2014, BBB again wrote to North American Power regarding the surge in volume of customer complaints registered during the first three months of 2014.  Specifically, complainants stated that, contrary to NAP's advertising claim that switching electric and gas service to NAP would result in lower energy costs, consumers' actual costs during the 2013 - 2014 winter months rapidly escalated to three or four times the rate customers paid their previous energy suppliers.

In a response dated April 17, 2014, NAP attributed the energy cost fluctuations affecting its variable rate customers to the Winter Energy Shortage caused by the unusually cold winter.  The company has generally responded to complaints by offering partial cost adjustments.
