Complaint: I stopped in to cash a check written to me by a CB&T account holder. The commercial window cashier told me there is a five dollar charge to cash a check because I don't have an account with them. It's your check! Honor it without a charge. Wells Fargo doesn't charge when I take them their check to cash, nor does Suntrust. Imagine if the treasury charged a fee to honor it's bills.
Desired Settlement: There's only one right thing to do here. CB&T should honor it's checks without a fee.
Columbus Bank and Trust is in receipt of the complaint submitted by Mr. *****. The following response is provided.
Our goal is to provide the highest level of service to our customers as well as those who are not our customers and may have a reason to be in our branches. In mid-2012 we implemented a fee for non-customer cashing “on-us” checks. The fee is a tiered structure, based on the amount of the check. The fee to cash a check in the amount of $0 to $25 is free, $25.01 to $100.00 is a $2.00 fee, and $100.01 and up is charged a $5.00 fee. We believe this is a reasonable fee for providing this service, and our team members are instructed to advise the non-customer of this fee prior to cashing the check.
Even though this fee does not directly impact our customers, it is included on our schedule of fees and charges provided to our customers at account opening and periodically thereafter.
