9-25-13 welcome centered charged credit card for unauthorized $80 charge, manually keyed, not swiped.
Stopped at welcome center to get map, ***** said he could get us a room at a discounted rate and free touring pkg, we just had to attend a non time sharing m. We had to produce a c, be over age 25 and make at least 50k income. I hesitated and told him I didn't want to give my credit card since we would be paying cash at the inn upon check in. He assured me nothing would be charged, it's to hold room at that special discounted rate. We paid $20 cash deposit to get this rate. Arriving at check in they rec'd fax from ***** for reservation along with copy of credit card, we pd cash for our one night stay. Next morning stopped at desk talking to guest svc attendant, he stated we didn't get special rate for attending the non time share meeting, we would've got the same rate as if we walked in from the street. We did not attend their meeting nor went to any free touring pkg.
The unauthorized charge $80 to be credited to my card. Plus the $20 deposit that we were told to pay to hold our free gifts and to get the discounted rate.
At Red Top Welcome Center of Charleston (Operated by TJK Brothers, LLC) we are a reservation/ service based welcome center for Charleston. We offer free information about Charleston and multiple ways for guests to book hotel reservations and attraction tickets.
Some guests opt to use our service to purchase discounted attraction tickets and discounted hotel nights; prices which are not available or offered to the public. Other guests chose to take advantage of a promotional package which we offer, which involves a 60-90 minute sales presentation. In turn for their time the guests receive a more deeply discounted hotel stay and their choice of free attraction tickets or dining certificates. Obviously this package is not for everyone, and we are not affiliated with the group that does the promotions. However, all information pertaining to this promotional package is disclosed to guests and guests sign all the paperwork acknowledging as such. This guest is no different and all signed paperwork can be provided.
This guest is stating that they spoke to a representative of the hotel and were led to believe something different. Unfortunately if they did indeed speak to a representative, that representative does not work for TJK Brothers or Red Top Welcome Center, and is not authorized to speak of our service. This guest signed up for a contracted promotional rate, and chose not to attend the promotion. As stated and explained in all paperwork, which guest was given a copy of and can be provided, "...If guest does not attend and qualify for the preview, guest may be charged the difference in the Hotel Walk-In Rate and the .... (discounted) Rate for the entirety of the stay... to the credit card listed above, by TJK Brothers Consulting, LLC". That difference was $80.00 per night.
If the guest would like the $20.00 seating deposit refunded, we can operate as a go between them and the company operating the promotion, as we are not affiliated as earlier stated.
Final Consumer Response
(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
They are very misleading. Stating we get discount on room rate when according to the hotel guest attendant we got the same rate as if we walked in from the street. We did not attend their meeting due to that fact nor did we receive any free gifts. We did not save any money but paid them a total of $100! ($20 cash deposit plus the $80charge to my credit card). We've been warned about these types of schemes, now I will warn others!
