How to Select a Contractor
Choosing a remodeling or building contractor can be a major undertaking. Consumers can ensure satisfaction by carefully shopping for a contractor. Ask for recommendations from friends and associates. Get at least three bids for the job that you wish to have done. Make sure the materials, labor costs and hidden fees, such as delivery and clean-up, are written into the contract. Although you should never pay for all of the work up front, there will be instances where you will need to pay a portion of the charges for materials, special/custom orders, etc. Make sure the contractor is bonded and carries workmen's compensation insurance. If he/she is self-employed, he/she should also have liability insurance. Ask to see his/her contractor's license. Also ask if he is a member of a Builders Association. Make very sure that the contractor takes care of any needed permits. Finally, always call BBB for a report on the contractor or company.
