BBB Offers Free On-Site Document Shredding and Identity Theft Prevention Tips

BBB invites community to take part in Secure Your ID Day

For Immediate Release – October 6, 2010 - Better Business Bureau and sponsors Rad Air Complete Car Care and Newschannel 5 invite the Greater Cleveland community to BBB “Secure Your ID” Day Saturday, October 23, 2010 at the Westlake location of Rad Air. Residents and small businesses are encouraged to attend the event and take a key step in identity protection by shredding and properly disposing of their sensitive paper documents as well as CDs and floppy discs. BBB staff will also be on-site to provide expert advice and tips for identity theft protection.

Secure Your ID Day is part of National Protect Your Identity Week (October 17-23) spearheaded by BBB and the National Foundation of Credit Counseling.

Shredding services are being provided by Maple Heights-based All Ohio Secure Shred. “Properly destroying documents that carry information you don’t want getting into the hands of crooks is an important first step to fighting identity theft, but it doesn’t end there,” said David Weiss, BBB president. “That’s why BBB experts will also be on hand offering important advice and simple steps everyone can take to prevent ID theft in their daily lives, both online and off.”

Last year alone, 11.1 million Americans became victims of ID theft, resulting in the loss of $54 billion, according to a 2010 report from Javelin Strategy and Research.

New this event – BBB will be collecting your old cell phone for recycling by Wireless Alliance. As many as 150 million cell phones are retired in the United States every year and more than 80 percent end up decomposing in landfills where the batteries can leach toxic materials into the environment, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Don't be concerned about the phones being wiped clean; Wireless Alliance removes 100% of your content from the phones turned in, but you can also remove your own data prior to submitting.
