              03/14/2024

I bought my policy for my 5 yr cat - who is healthy 11 months ago - I just received a renewal policy to begin in a month and the price has risen from 26.32/month to 43.10 -- at least a 60% increase - i didn't file any claim for that year . I tried calling 3 times to get a person, but gave up each time after 10 min- no one answered ( normal work hours) I emailed, and someone did respond which I appreciate - with excuses of the reason for an increase - age; tenure of insurances (??) and inflation. I understand the inflation - but do not accept age ( we all age if we do not die) and kitty is not old 6-7 - that is not geriatric - Tenure? what does that mean? I was told the increase depends on the underwriter and state . I looked up underwriter - ******** ****** - I do not see ******** ****** in the R.I. list of Companies - how do I find who is the underwriter. ? 60% increase seems unreasonable - I would like detail of how this amount of increase was determined . I am considering cancelling - especially if this will continue to rise each yr - and the renewal says it does not apply to pre-existing conditions ( which i did not have any when i first got the policy) but if my cat has a problem, say example vomiting / diarrhea whatever, during the rest of this policy before the renewal - if any more potential issues of the same arise - that wouldn't be covered?? Please explain, comment, thank you

              Embrace Pet Insurance Response

              03/15/2024

Hello L***** we are sorry to hear that. We know a premium increase is not ideal. As our representative likely mentioned, premiums do increase over time with all insurance products, and pet insurance is no exception. Some of the factors that impact premiums each year include the age of a pet, tenure of the policy, and veterinary costs in the zip code where the pet resides. With each year a pet ages, they are statistically more likely to get sick or hurt, and we have to take that calculated risk into account when pricing premiums. The longer your pet has been insured is also a contributing factor as we expect pets insured at a younger age to have fewer pre-existing conditions. This is a great thing for you because it allows us to cover more claims. Our premiums are based on actuarial data, and approved by each state’s Department of Insurance. If you would like we can provide you with your state's filing number. This would provide you access to the raw data behind the increase. We cannot guarantee how helpful it will be in understanding this increase further, as it is used by actuarial specialists and we are not able to provide further guidance beyond providing you with the filing number. Over the lifetime with any pet insurance company you are likely to see very similar trends, it just may vary when the increase happens. We do structure our policies to allow each pet parent to change coverage parameters to adjust the premium based on what they feel is best for their individual pet and situation. Our policies have always excluded pre-existing conditions which is defined in our Terms and Conditions as: 32. Pre-existing Condition(s) means: a. A Chronic Condition observed by you or your Veterinary Provider prior to the end of the Waiting Period for your Pet(s) and any related conditions; or b. An Illness or Injury that first occurred or showed Clinical Signs prior to the end of the Waiting Period for your Pet and any related conditions. c. Undiagnosed conditions with the same Clinical Signs as those in a. or b. above are also considered pre-existing. If you would like your state's filing number, or to discuss options on lowering coverage to lower your premium you can give us a call at 800-511-9172 or email ************************************* with your policy number and we can assist you further.

As stated above, Embrace says 1) ' with each year the pet ages' - so that means every year you will increase premium each year pet ages ...( even when pet is not considered geriatric) Well you should state that up front as part of your policy along with the expected % increase so we can expect that .( My policy increased 60%) . 2) "The longer your pet has been insured is also a contributing factor as we expect pets insured at a younger age to have fewer pre-existing conditions." That should be stated too A bit of a contradiction, however, Well, yes, my cat has had the policy for barely a year and is only 1 yr older, not geriatric -- It is like you are penalizing us for staying with your company longer being healthy with no submitted claim. So, I believe you have not been totally honest by not stating all this up front in your policy prior to engagement. 3) Pre-existing condition prior to Waiting Period' I understand that - she did not have any- but you are excluding 'Pre-existing -' conditions in the renewal ? That is what is being stated here -and in my renewal policy now . That too was not made clear, up front, in the initial engagement policy. What does that mean? Developed Diabetes one year and now no longer covered next year because it is 'Pre-existing ?" So chronic conditions would not be covered? What if pet develops an abcess on leg, ( new problem) and is treated, but somehow abcess returns the next year ( as sometimes this kind of thing can happen ; could have been caused by a foreign body not previous discovered. You are saying this is pre-exising condition now and will not be covered? Yes, I would like the state of R.I. filing number, please . I do want to know how the percent increase is determined - - I will try to call the number you provide- but I had no luck the other day in getting a person to answer, I was on hold a long time with each 3 different extension options. Maybe that was an unusual day, i hope. I realize and understand about the high cost of Veterinary care - Quality veterinary care, like medical care for humans are provided by dedicated and well educated and trained veterinary professionals; and it costs money. and your intension to provide coverage for our beloved pets is admirable if it is well meaning. But it would have been best to be told to expect a yearly increase at the beginnign of the policy.
