Additional Notes

Complaint: I'm reporting this company for false advertising. On their website, I had requested helpful information about a product of theirs to block noise from my living room to my room because I'm honestly not familiar with sound proofing. 4 or 5 days later, a woman calls me by phone from the website and informs me about their sound absorption sheets. She had told me that these sheets would reduce 50% of the noise. After I purchased them (for almost $300), I installed them on my room but then only noticed about a 5% to 10% noise reduction -- NOT 50% as the woman from the website had advertised to me on the phone. I then wanted a refund and she accepted it, however, it costs $139 to ship the sheets back. I then contacted them again because I felt cheated about their false advertising, but all I was told is that the sheets were not meant to block nearby sound (which is totally the opposite of what I was told before purchasing). The problem here is the false advertising and lack of responsibility for lying. I consider this as a corrupted strategy of theirs to false advertise their quality of products and then having the customers have a hard time deciding to send their products back because of the high cost of shipping. On FedEX and UPS it would cost me almost $140 to send them back (from CA to OH).

Desired Settlement: Even though I shouldn't pay a cent because of direct false advertising, I will pay up to 15% as a restocking fee, however, they would have to pay for shipping the products back.

Business Response:

Audimute Soundproofing will do everything in our power to meet and exceed ******’s expectations. I discussed alternatives with ****** to complete this transaction. I will be issuing ****** a full refund based on Audimute 100% Satisfaction Guarantee policy.

In response to the false advertisements, I have pasted verbiage from Audimute’s website below to refute this claim. While discussing ******’s application of Audimute acoustic sheets, I discovered that ****** has yet to install the sheets properly. The scenario described by ****** to our team is much different than the scenario that ****** has used our sheets. Our sales staff was not deceitful or unethical, just uninformed. Occasionally, Customers are unable to provide or unaware of how important certain details are to the process, which leads to mis-diagnosis.

With that in mind, Audimute fully understands that some situations are not conducive to our products. We strive to provide sound solutions not products. In this case our product was not the solution; therefore we will refund the purchase. I have provided extended consultation to ****** and have decided that his expectations cannot be met with our product. We hope that ******’s is able to find a solution and also that his experience with Audimute was not summarized by this complaint.

“Our sound absorption sheets are often referred to as ‘soundproofing blankets’ (a common misconception between sound absorption and soundproofing, click here to learn about sound). Audimute Sound Absorption Sheets are not soundproofing blankets, but may indeed reduce volume levels if the space is properly treated. When hung throughout the room, these sheets absorb echoes, reverberation and noise reflection.Audimute Sound Absorption Sheets have been tested in an acoustic laboratory and have an impressive NRC rating of .70.

It’s also important to know that lower frequency sounds cannot be absorbed very well. This is true for all sound absorbent materials and is due to the fact that lower frequencies have longer wavelengths. These waves travel through sound absorbent materials easier, thus are not absorbed too well. In contrast, it’s more difficult for mid and high frequencies to travel through sound absorbent materials. Audimute Sound Absorption Sheets have proved to be highly effective sound attenuation materials, helping hundreds of customers on a quest of how to dampen sound. However, it’s critical to understand that sound absorption sheets work extremely well as sound absorbent materials by absorbing echoes and reverberation, NOT as sound barriers. This means that hanging Audimute Sound Absorption Sheets in your room will NOT block sound from entering and exiting, but rather will reduce the sound pressure levels in the space producing a quieter environment both inside and outside the treated space.  (Audimute offers a product called Peacemaker for applications where blocking the transmission of sound is the goal.)”

“Although Audimute Sound Absorption Sheets are made to absorb sound within a room, they do have a number of 'sound blocking' characteristics. In some instances, Audimute Sound Absorption Sheets can work as a ‘barrier’ over windows, doors, and on walls (if used in multiple layers) as this type of material does add mass.  The fact that Audimute Sound Absorption Sheets are affordable, portable, simple to install, and relatively non-invasive is also a big plus, especially for apartment renters.
