Several local charities are providing emergency heat, rent, utility, and food assistance this winter. As investments take a hit, layoffs increase, and bonuses are cut, more and more people are turning to local charities to provide basic necessities for their families. In today’s tough economic times, demand for services from local charities has often outpaced contributions.
“There is no doubt local charities need our help during these tough economic times,” said Jocile Ehrlich, BBB President and CEO. “Just make sure you’re supporting an ethical charity that will accept your contribution when you’re ready to give and after you’ve had all your questions answered.”
As you consider what assistance you might provide to these charities, BBB advises donors to make sure they do their research and carefully consider how the charity will spend their contribution.
“Do not fall for high-pressure fundraising techniques simply because you know there’s an urgent need,” says Ehrlich. “Ask the charity for as much information as you need to make a decision and always check with your BBB before you give.”
