Keeping track of paperwork associated with any purchase is the single most important step to protect yourself from misrepresentation or fraud. Keep a special file for auto, appliance, and computer purchases. Such a file should include: receipts, warranties, contracts, and even notations of oral promises.
Make sure you understand and keep records of all costs including shipping, financing rates, and payment plans.
Unless the product is defective or was misrepresented, stores are not obligated to issue refunds, store credits, or exchanges. Return policies differ from store to store, so inquire about refund and exchange policies, especially for gifts or for clothing that does not fit. Keep all packaging so that the item can be returned to the store in salable condition or, if appropriate, shipped to the manufacturer.
