General Advice for Employment Services

When looking for employment, explore every avenue: friends, the Internet, classified ads, support groups, as well as state and private employment services. Leave no stone unturned. Generally the wider the search, the better and more satisfying will be your eventual employment. Employment services, even if you choose not to use them, can help your job marketability through an opportunity to gain precious interview experience.

There are two types of employment services, career marketers and employment agencies. The first offers genuine career counseling for an up-front fee. It does not promise employment. In effect, you hire them to market your abilities for employment. There are wide varieties of payment arrangements. Investigate all of them along with any contract you may be asked to sign. Also find out what fees you are still liable for if you are laid off, fired, or quit.

Employment agencies, on the other hand, are free. In effect, a company contracts with an agency to find employees. Shop around. You may register simultaneously with several companies to increase your options and employment opportunities. If you choose to register with more than one company, be sure to ask that your recruiter get your authorization before sending your resume to a company, in order to avoid the client company from receiving your resume from multiple firms. You are free to accept or reject any position offered. While generally considered temporary employment, it may lead to a full time position. Until you accept full time employment, please remember that you are working for the temporary agency and are limited to the benefits of that agency.

Also, as a temporary worker, you may be working next to a full time company employee with better pay and better benefits. But the advantage of temporary employment is flexibility with no long-term commitments. If offered full time employment by the company, you will become eligible for their benefits and the seniority privileges that accompany them.

Before considering any of the above, job seekers are strongly encouraged to visit state employment agencies on either side of the river. There is no charge for this service.
