Complaint: As Canadian medical missionaries volunteering with Samaritans purse from December of 2015 to May 2016 we were refered to Global Underwriters by this medical agency for our insurance. We were working as nurses in Northern Togo, west Africa ( to the full knowledge of Global Underwriters) and were based in austere conditions at a newly opened hospital in a town called Mango. We purchased medical and evacuation insurance from Global Underwriters and have been shocked by their gross unproffessionalism, complacency, inability to track claim forms and general lack of understanding. My wife became sick ( while in Africa) with malaria twice, parasites and ameboa. She required two hospital admissions, clinic visits and multiple physician consults. Meanwhile we were both still working four 12 hour shifts per week in the midst of multiple patient deaths, local violence, outbreaks infectious diseases and other issues common in a third world country. We paid in local currency cash to the hospital ( the only option available as credit cards, debit cards do not obviously exist in remote environments). We made Global Underwriters aware of these hospital admissions via the appropriate forms, submitting pictures of the papers provided by the hospital administration. Upon submitting the forms by email while still in Africa we received a confirmation email stating that Global Underwriters had opened up a case file. After waiting 25 business days for the claim to be reviewed ( as per the confirmation email received) we requested our power of attorney to inquire on the claim status. Global Underwriters denied receiving the claim and reluctantly accepted the original claim upon forwarding the original confirmation email. They stated that otherwise we would have to submit the entire claim as a new application. Upon reviewing the claim we have now received communication from the Global Underwriters that they require the world "Paid" to be stamped on the forms submitted even though the forms have been signed by the director of finance. I would like to make the fallowing points clear to both Global Underwriters and the BBB: 1. Global Underwriters is fortunate that we are able to even submit printed papers laying out the charges in detail as Mango, Togo, West Africa is a very remote and isolated location. 2. Togo is a French speaking country. The forms that were submitted were painstaking translated from French to English for the convenience of Global Underwriters as I assume none of the staff is fluent in French. Missing one single word "Paid" from the extensive documentation provided is not a prelude for the company to drag out the claim process 3. In the process of volunteering with Samaritans Purse and World Medical Mission it is the requirement of volunteers (not paid, no financial gain, no financial compensation, all expenses paid by the volunteer) to have multiple background checks, criminal record checks and references performed. It is appalling that despite all of these factors we have been treated by Global Underwriters as though we are attempting to defraud the company. 4. Regardless of the outcome of this complaint I will be launching a formal complaint with Samaritans Purse and World Medical Mission due to the issues as raised in previous paragraphs. It is not only dangerous for volunteers to embark on missions in which the majority of cases they become ill at least once without the full support of an insurance company that actually will support and fulfill its obligations during times of extream stress and in remote locations.

Desired Settlement: Global Underwriters will fulfill its obligations within the original timelines as specified in the contract. In addition a formal apology is required for the mismanagement of our claim. If this cannot be accomplished we demand a full refund of the fees paid as this insurance company has not fulfilled its obligations and looks to have no intention of doing so.

I am emailing you in response to an email that was forwarded to us on behalf of the policy holder, Mr. **** ******. This is in reference to a claim that was filed for his wife, Mrs. Breanna ******.
We received an email from Mrs. ****** on 05/18/2016 stating she had tried to submit a claim a couple of times but her internet was unreliable. The email that we did receive on 05/18/2016 had an attached claim form, multiple prescriptions, a doctor’s office visit and labs.
We have this claim, in our system, pending additional information. This claim has not been denied.
An email was sent on 06/14/2016 to the insured’s mother, Ms. Wanda Wiebe, per the insured’s request as Ms. Wiebe was the best person to communicate with while the insured was out of the country. In this email we let Ms. Wiebe know that the documentation did not include proof of payment.
We have since been informed that the insured paid cash for this claim. Per our policies and procedures, we must have some sort of proof of payment. This could be something as simple as a “PAID” stamp on the invoice.
I want to ensure you that this claim is ready to be paid as soon as we receive proof of payment. I have attached copies of everything we have received to date in this email.
