Per a February 16, 2007 press release, the Illinois Attorney General's office, in cooperation with national phone companies AT&T and Telephone Data Systems issued a warning to consumers about the growing threat of telephone scams referred to as "Vishing". Vishing is the act of perpetrators cold calling consumers while impersonating professional personal, often of actual phone companies. The scammer will proceed to offer the consumer a deal whereby a savings can be had on their phone bill if they only share private or personal information to confirm the account. This information will be anything from telephone numbers, home address, or consumers' names.
While Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has stated that these scammers are known to speak quickly and in a rush in an attempt to confuse consumers, when faced with questioning they quickly become flustered, and often hang up on their intended victim.
Both commercial and residential phone service customers are being targeted by this scam. AT&T, TDS, and The Illinois Attorney General's office all offer contact numbers, requesting that consumers please call in with any information or experiences they may have.
