Gift Card Illinois Law
Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office has issued a press release on 12/20/2004 regarding a new law, effective January 1, 2005, that requires all material terms and conditions connected with gift cards to be disclosed to consumers. This includes expiration dates and any fees involved, such as account-maintenance fees, dormancy fees, activation charges, etc. If an expiration date is not disclosed on the gift card, a toll free number must be provided so the consumer can easily find out when the card expires. According to the alert, the legislation will encourage businesses to do away with expiration dates altogether.
