Business' Initial Response
On June 8, 2013 *** ******** had his 1989 Toyota Land Cruiser towed to University Auto Care because it would not start. Customer had hooked up battery cables wrong to jump it off and had burnt out several fuses and caused other issues, such as the vehicle would not start and the wipers and radio and other electrical components were not working now. When checking for the "no start" issue it was corrected by replacing a fuse and fuse hold at the battery. The vehicle started and was running as additional issues were being diagnosed. When checking the wiper operation it was determined that the wiper switch was malfunctioning and needed to be replaced. Due to the age and the type of vehicle this was a special order part, which cannot be returned for credit, and was authorized by the customer for purchase. We received the switch but before it could be installed we were notified that the vehicle had been sold to ******* *******. He did not want us to continue the repairs on the vehicle and was willing to pay the bill for the special order part and labor that had been performed to that point and understood that the vehicle was not repaired. On June 17, 2013 he paid the bill for the 1989 Toyota Land Cruiser and received the keys. The total bill was for $233.97, which consisted of $60.00 labor , $160.97 parts, $2.00 shop supplies, and $11.00 tax. The parts bill consisted of $156.99 for the special ordered wiper switch, $1.99 for a fuse, and $1.99 for a fuse holder. The labor charge was a minimum charge for checking the "no start" issue. He was not charged for any diagnosis or repairs to the wipers, the alternator or for any other electrical issues or for repairing the vehicle. We could not return the part and had been authorized by the owner to special order the non-returnable part. We did not install the wiper switch so we cannot be responsible for the wiper repair. Vehicle was not running when it was towed into our shop but it was running when Mr. ******* paid the bill and drove it away from the shop. He did receive the service and parts that he paid for and stated that he was going to work on the vehicle himself. We cannot be responsible for any additional work that was done by the individual, who is not a mechanic, or another shop after it has left our property. Customer returned on June 25, 2013 and requested a refund for the full amount of the bill. He was informed again that the part was special ordered and could not be returned and we had not installed the part nor was he charged for the installation of the wiper switch or any repairs to the wipers. He was also informed that the vehicle was running and driveable when he picked it up. He was only charged for the parts and a minimal labor and diagnostic fee for the "no start" issue and he was not charged for repairing the vehicle. He did receive the parts and labor that he was charged for and he had requested that we not finish fixing the vehicle so there was no guarantee about the operational condition of the vehicle. He did request that **** chargeback our account for $233.97 but after reviewing the case they declined to chargeback our account because the customer was charged appropriately.
