AAFA St. Louis has four programs Project Concern, Asthma and Allergy Education Programs, and Asthma, Allergy Essentials for Child Care Providers, and Food Allergy: Management for Schools. Project Concern, is a comprehensive asthma management program that provides life-saving medications, equipment, education, support and case management to children suffering from asthma. The ABC’s of Asthma program provides asthma education and support to clients, schools and the community at large. AAFA utilizes the Health Educator staff person and a speaker’s bureau to present the educational programs. The Asthma and Allergy Essentials for Child Care Providers educates day care providers on asthma and allergies (including food allergies) so they can feel confident in accepting and attending to children who suffer from asthma and other allergic diseases. Food Allergy: Management for Schools educates school nurses and other school employees on the effects of food allergies and how to best avoid these situations. The goals of all AAFA programs include improving low-income children’s ability to effectively manage their asthma, improving access to healthcare for low-income children with asthma, providing life saving resources (medications, spacers, nebulizers, bed encasings, and peak flow meters) to children from low-income families, and educating childcare providers, school personnel, and families with ways to care for children with asthma and allergies and how to provide a safe and healthy environment for children with these chronic diseases.
