Programs

IRWP services are provided to isolated immigrant and refugee women in the community that are unable to attend standard ESL classes due to employment, transportation, children, or physical/psychological war trauma. Volunteer teachers provide one-on-one instruction that includes speaking, reading, and writing English weekly in two 1-hour sessions. Volunteers receive complete lesson plans, books, workbooks, supplies, evaluation tools, and ongoing support from Liaison Teachers, Curriculum Coordinator, Program Assistant, and Executive Director. Some volunteers may seek opportunities to take students on “community field trips” to the grocery store, bank, zoo or other places of need or interest to allow students to practice their new skills in the community with the security of a teacher’s presence. Their work is focused on achieving the student’s personal goals that may be employment, citizenship, or basic communicating skills. Volunteers assist students in preparing for employment and citizenship by using application forms and citizenship materials. They practice language skills and phrases to improve the student’s ability to communicate in person and by phone with medical professionals, social service personnel, children’s teachers, and others throughout the community. During teaching sessions, teachers assist and educate students in areas such as paying bills, making medical appointments, and cultural understanding.
