Programs

Thanks to a winning combination of generous people who donate food and funds and volunteer their time, Second Harvest Inland Northwest was able to distribute 19.7 million pounds of food for hunger relief last fiscal year. Second Harvest uses community contributions to pay the costs of securing, warehousing and distributing food donated by growers, grocers and manufacturers throughout the region and further-reaching parts of the county. The food was provided to 275 partner nonprofits operating small food pantries and meal programs serving people in 21 Eastern Washington and five North Idaho counties. Second Harvest also operates programs that target hunger among vulnerable children, families and seniors. Those programs include Kids Cafe, which provides healthy snacks and nutrition education for nearly 1,000 disadvantaged youngsters in Spokane County and the Tri-Cities. Second Harvest also operates a Mobile Food Bank that brings fresh produce and other perishable food to high-need urban and rural communities. Mobile Food Bank distributions are regularly held at public schools serving a high percentage of children who are living in poverty. Second Harvest offers Food Sense nutrition education in partnership with Washington State University Spokane County Extension. The classes are offered at nine of the 20 Spokane County food pantries that Second Harvest stocks with food and teach low-income participants how to make healthy meals from scratch using items included in food that is provided to them coupled with inexpensive ingredients they purchase on their own.
