The Escondido Humane Society shelters homeless, abandoned, or lost animals while the animal waits for an adoption. The charity will provide care and shelter to all homeless companion animals in the area regardless of age, breed, and intensive medical or behavioral needs. The Escondido Humane Society ensures that these animals are taken care of, no matter how long they need to stay at the shelter. According to the charity, in 2011, 2,909 animals were adopted (1,268 were dogs, 1,482 were cats, and 95 were rabbits). The Escondido Humane Society provides Animal Control services to the cities of Escondido, San Marcos and Poway, and the Pala and Rincon Indian Reservations. Residents of these communities can rely on the support of four full-time Animal Control officers and two Humane Officers, who are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The officers handle a variety of situations, from picking up stray animals and educating the public to investigating neglect and abuse, and enforcing laws. According to the charity, in 2011, the Animal Control Services sheltered 5,059 lost, abandoned, sick, neglected, and abused animals. Of those, 1,251 were picked up by our Animal Control officers in the field. In addition, the charity provides licensing services for animals in the three communities, rabies vaccinations, and microchipping clinics.
