Programs

Each year, Elk Hill helps more than 350 children in central Virginia turn their lives around. They arrive with the common label of “at-risk youth”. In truth, each brings problems as unique as his or her potential. This is why the “Elk Hill Way” is comprised of a continuum of support built around learning, counseling, and play. The approach, which has been shaped over Elk Hill’s 41-year history, provides each child with the pieces he or she needs to succeed including, whenever possible, the support and involvement of the child’s parents. For many lower income parents, it is difficult to provide the resources that can nourish a child’s development. If the child suffers from behavioral problems, it may be impossible. Elk Hill exists for these families and works with children for whom nothing else has worked. Our staff, trustees, and volunteers will tell you that Elk Hill matters because it helps children and families find courage – to succeed, to learn, to love, to heal, and to grow. Every Elk Hill story may not have the perfect ending, but most affirm that the children who enter Elk Hill are remarkably resilient when given the right environment. Elk Hill has a variety of facilities to deal with the diverse set of problems facing our youth. In our group homes, many of the children come from broken families, and many have grown up in multiple foster homes. Our day school classes include students who have been suspended or expelled from school for behaviors linked to emotional or learning disabilities. In each short life, they have developed their own way to survive every challenge imaginable: poverty, hunger, physical and emotional abuse, or simply profound neglect. As a result, each brings a significant gap in their education, behavior, or life skills that must be filled. Elk Hill is able to make a difference because of the ability of our highly skilled staff to fill those gaps with the love, care, and structure needed to make the child whole again.
