Since 1970, the Science Museum of Virginia has been the Commonwealth’s flagship institution for informal science learning. In 2009 more than 310,000 people visited the Museum located in Richmond’s historic Broad Street Station; 52,000 were students on field trips. The Science Museum houses more than 60,000 square feet of interactive exhibitions, the IMAX®DOME theater, live science demonstrations, teaching labs, and the Carpenter Science Theatre Company, employing a broad range of experiences to inspire and engage audiences of all ages. Also a popular gathering place for civic and business groups, the Museum hosts some 500 community events each year. The Science Museum works with state and local education administration to support their K-12 education goals. Museum programming and exhibits are aligned with Virginia’s Standards of Learning. The Science Museum is one of the region’s top providers of lifelong learning, hosting some 75 guest speakers annually, addressing an incredibly wide range of topics. During the past two years, Science Museum educators traveled to 53 localities across the Commonwealth, visiting schools, libraries, festivals, scout troops and community centers to serve more than 100,000 citizens. As a component of our outreach, our team provided more than 20,000 contact hours of intensive Standards of Learning-aligned instruction to students in some of the highest-need schools.
