We speak out publicly to promote and defend their interests. We oppose all forms of animal cruelty. We promote spaying and neutering to achieve and retain a no-kill community. We oppose any taking of the lives of healthy or treatable animals and do not participate in such conduct ourselves. Programs

The Richmond SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) was founded in 1891 by a group of influential Richmonders led by Joseph Bryan. Our organization saves the lives of more than 3,000 homeless animals each year and cares for approximately 350 dogs and cats every day. As a national leader in humane care and education, the Richmond SPCA is creating a more compassionate community through programs of pet-retention, adoption, rehabilitation, education, and spay/neuter. The Richmond SPCA maintains community relationships with YWCA, Safe Harbor, Meals on Wheels, Richmond Children’s Hospital, Homeward and area nursing homes and convalescent centers. Our myriad programs and services include low-cost and free spay/neuter surgeries, humane education programs, pet training classes, community outreach, free and affordable pet-retention services, and behavioral assistance through Web- and telephone-based help lines. Programs include SAAF, which provides shelter to the pets of women and families seeking refuge from situations of domestic abuse; Paws for Health, which provides the warmth of pet visits to severely-ill children and residents at area nursing homes; and Pets on Wheels, which provides pet companionship, free of charge, to Meals on Wheels clients. The Richmond SPCA is the largest provider of humane education, pet rehabilitation, spay/neuter and other animal-related programs and services in Central Virginia. In our state-of-the-art Robins-Starr Humane Center last year, we placed more than 3,000 orphaned pets into loving, permanent homes; rehabilitated more than 2,000 sick, injured or neonatal homeless animals; delivered nearly 18,000 hours of humane education to area youth and 6,000 hours of adult instruction; and spayed or neutered about 10,500 dogs and cats in our clinic.

For the fiscal year ended September 30, 2010, RSPCA's program expenses were:

Pet center operations 2,985,621
Humane education and programs 607,152
Total Program Expenses: $3,592,773
