Programs

The Richmond SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), which was founded in 1891 by a group of influential Richmonders led by Joseph Bryan, is a no-kill humane society dedicated to the principle that every life is precious. Our organization saves the lives of more than 3,000 homeless animals each year and cares for approximately 350 dogs and cats every day. As a national leader in humane care and education, the Richmond SPCA is aggressively tackling the problem of pet overpopulation through programs of pet-retention, adoption, education, and spay/neuter. The Richmond SPCA maintains community relationships with YWCA, Safe Harbor, Meals on Wheels, Richmond Children’s Hospital, Homeward and area nursing homes and convalescent centers. Our myriad programs and services include low-cost and free spay/neuter surgeries, humane education programs, community outreach, and behavioral assistance through Web- and telephone-based help lines. Programs include SAAF, which provides shelter to the pets of women and families seeking refuge from situations of domestic abuse; Paws for Health, which provides the warmth of pet visits to severely-ill children and residents at area nursing homes; and Pets on Wheels, which provides pet companionship, free of charge, to Meals on Wheels clients. The Richmond SPCA is the largest provider of humane education, pet rehabilitation, spay/neuter and other animal-related programs and services in Central Virginia. In our state-of-the-art Robins-Starr Humane Center last year, we placed about 3,000 orphaned pets into loving, permanent homes; rehabilitated about 2,200 sick and injured animals; delivered 17,000 hours of humane education to area youth and 6,000 hours of adult instruction; and spayed or neutered more than 13,000 dogs and cats in our clinic.

For the fiscal year ended September 30, 2008, RSPCA's program expenses were:

Pet Center Operations 3,339,790
Humane Education 730,373
Total Program Expenses: $4,070,163
