Programs

NMFA activities are directed toward education of military families about their rights and benefits and informing policymakers about the special challenges of military life. Volunteer NMFA representatives in military communities worldwide provide a direct link between military families and NMFA headquarters in the nation's capital. NMFA's programs include the National Military Family Association Operation Purple Camps, which are free summer camps for the children of soldiers deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. The goal of these free summer camps is to bring together youth who are experiencing some stage of a deployment and the stress that goes along with it. Operation Purple Camps aims to give kids the coping skills and support networks of peers to better handle these issues. The NMFA Joanne Holbrook Patton Military Spouse Scholarships are awarded to spouses of uniformed service members (active duty, National Guard and Reserve, retirees, and survivors) to obtain professional certification or to attend post secondary or graduate school. NMFA Family Awards are given to 12 families each year who exemplify the best of the military family lifestyle. The award provides an opportunity to recognize those families who have made the most of the adventure and conquered the challenges. NMFA Very Important Patriot (VIP) Awards recognize volunteers worldwide whose outstanding service contributes to improving the quality of life in their military and/or neighboring communities.
