BBB Wise Giving Alliance Comment

On August 5, 2010, an arrest warrant was issued in Ohio (Hamilton County Municipal Court, Case No. 10-CRA-25330) alleging that a former paid staff member of US Navy Veterans Association stole the personal identity of another individual and fraudulently solicited charitable donations from Ohioans in excess of $100,000. As of the date of this report, this individual is still at large.

In addition, as stated in a press release issued by the Ohio Attorney General, “On October 13 [2010] a Cuyahoga County Grand Jury indicted [the above mentioned charity executive] and an associate…on one count of aggravated theft, money laundering, and engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity based on their misappropriation of millions of dollars from this fraudulent charity.”

In addition, the associate mentioned in the October 13th indictment (USNVA’s former treasurer) was arrested. In a $2 million bond request (Court of Common Pleas, Cuyahoga County, Case No. 543025B-10-CR) the State of Ohio alleges, among other things, that:

“The Defendant is one of a handful of person[s] who operated a fraudulent organization, known as U.S. Navy Veterans Assoc. (USNVA), which defrauded innocent victims of up to one hundred million dollars nationally over the past eight years.”

In addition, “USNVA’s website, as well as their public filings in the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and other governmental offices, list dozens of directors and officers who are fictitious persons that do not exist.”

In view of the state government allegations noted above, the BBB Wise Giving Alliance has pulled its previous evaluative report on USNVA. Because the government allegations raised questions about the previous materials provided by USNVA, this organization has not been evaluated in relation to the 20 BBB Standards for Charity Accountability by the BBB Wise Giving Alliance.
