Programs

HMA was founded in 1939 by Father William Howard Bishop to establish a Catholic Church presence in rural regions of the United States. The organization reports that its missioners help meet the spiritual and material needs of those living in Appalachia, the South, and the Southwest. HMA reports that 1.5 million people live within its mission territory in counties where poverty levels are at least twice the national average and a large percentage of the population claims no church affiliation. The organization reports that there are 173 counties in the southern United States without a Catholic Church community and 196 counties without a resident pastoral minister (priest, deacon, brother, sister or lay professional). HMA missioners strive to establish the Catholic Church in these areas and work ecumenically with other Christian churches to help meet the needs of all those living in a mission county, regardless of race, religion or cultural background.

For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2010, HMA's program expenses were:

Mission aid 1,388,956
Mission education 1,234,488
Services to Glenmary priests and brothers 717,084
Member's training 517,026
Recruiting 309,684
Mass offerings 63,144
