Programs

SCF reports working in more than 40 countries, including the United States, and serves 64 million children in 2009, directly and indirectly, with programs in health and nutrition, education, emergency response, protection and livelihoods. In the U.S., SCF serves thousands of children in rural communities in 15 states to provide quality literacy, physical activity and nutrition programming through in-school, after-school and summer programs. Globally, SCF development programs deliver assistance to children and families in the areas of maternal and child health, education and economic opportunities. Health programs focus on survival, health, and development of mothers and children, emphasizing child survival, reproductive health (including family planning, safe motherhood, and HIV/AIDs) and nutrition. Education programs emphasize basic learning, both formal and informal, that helps children and adults develop reading, writing, and mathematics skills. Through our emergency response programs, SCF provides relief to children and families affected by both natural disasters and armed conflicts, and has developed a training program to teach children in high-risk environments how to respond during emergencies. SCF reports that in 2009 the organization provided humanitarian assistance in 24 emergencies, reaching 1.5 million children in locations affected by armed conflict (Ethiopia, Gaza, Pakistan and Sudan) and by natural disasters (El Salvador, Indonesia and the Philippines).
