Evaluation Conclusions

International Crisis Aid (ICA) does not meet the following Standard for Charity Accountability.

Standard 4: Compensated Board Members - Not more than one or 10% (whichever is greater) directly or indirectly compensated person(s) serving as voting member(s) of the board. Compensated members shall not serve as the board's chair or treasurer.

ICA does not meet this Standard because:

  • Two members out of the six member board of directors (33%) are compensated either directly or indirectly.  One member is paid staff and the other is the spouse of that paid staff person.
  • The indirectly compensated chief executive officer also serves as the chair of the board of directors.

Child Sponsorship

ICA sponsors orphans and vulnerable children in Ethiopia and Haiti.  The ICA child sponsorship program is a one sponsor per child program.  Ongoing support of $35 per month for Ethiopia or $40 per month for Haiti will assist ICA in providing food, medical care, education, school supplies and uniforms, as well as other resources.  ICA works with boys and girls, ages 1-19.  Sponsors are matched with a child once the sponsor provides the first month's contribution.  Sponsors receive a photo of the child included in an introductory packet about their child.  Sponsors also receive annual updates on the status and development of the sponsored child, including an updated photograph.
