Programs

Physicians, nurses, public and human rights experts, forensic scientists, and others work through PHR to document and advocate against human rights violations. PHR develops evidence for justice and accountability, designs mechanisms to prevent human rights violations, and promotes and implements systems that advance the health and dignity of all people. Members are encouraged to participate in letter writing campaigns for the release of detained activists, meet with members of Congress, and submit opinion pieces for publications in newspapers and journals. The PHR Asylum Network is a group of health professionals who evaluate asylum seekers for medical and/or psychological signs of torture. PHR's Health and Justice for Youth project monitors US juvenile detention facilities to ensure that the health and human rights of youth are protected. The Colleagues at Risk program is a letter writing campaign promoting the release of detained health workers. The National Student Program mobilizes students in the health professions to become human rights activists. Some of PHR’s advocacy efforts focus on overcoming HIV/AIDS discrimination, stigma, and lack of access to healthcare. The organization uses DNA technology to identify and reunite families separated during civil war. PHR also looks into the torture of detainees by US officials and offers pro bono medical assessments of asylum seekers claiming abuse abroad.
