Programs

KI works with local partners in Los Angeles, CA and Washington, DC to provide older youth in foster care with meaningful connections to caring adults who advocate on their behalf and help find them permanent families. KI reports that it currently serves 85 children and teens in Los Angeles – connecting them to caring adults and permanent families through a weekend-hosting program known as Weekend Miracles. KI also reports that the organization provides mentoring and foster care support services to about 25 teens each year in Washington, DC. KI’s Summer Miracles Program brings orphans from foreign countries to the USA for five-week summer visits. KI reports that, since 1999 when the program began, nearly 90% (approximately 1,500) of the children who have participated in the program found families who have adopted them or are pursuing adoption. In Colombia and Russia, KI works with local governments and social service agencies to raise awareness about orphaned children, trains social workers to better meet their needs, promotes public education, and engages local governments. KI works through a variety of channels at the local, national, and international level to shape policy that impacts youth in foster care and orphans. KI has conducted research to help inform and propel advocacy efforts. The organization currently manages the Families for Orphans Coalition which focuses on increasing U.S. attention for permanent family care for orphans and supports the Families for Orphans Act, which will provide a greater U.S. focus on permanent family care worldwide.
