Evaluation Conclusions

              

Organization for Autism Research (OAR) does not meet the following Standard for Charity Accountability.

Standard 3: Frequency and Attendance of Board Meetings - An organization shall have a minimum of three evenly spaced meetings per year of the full governing body with a majority in attendance, with face-to-face participation. A conference call of the full board can substitute for one of the three meetings of the governing body. For all meetings, alternative modes of participation are acceptable for those with physical disabilities.

OAR does not meet this Standard because:

  • The board of directors held one face to face meeting in the past fiscal year ending June 30, 2011.

Programs

              

OAR's programs aim to turn research into information. The organization funds autism research through two annual grants programs: The Applied Research Competition awards grants up to $30,000 for research related to diagnosis, treatment, intervention, and quality of life across the life span; The Graduate Research Grant Program awards grants of $1,000 or $2,000 to graduate students conducting autism research in pursuit of a Master’s or doctorate in a field related to autism. The OARacle, OAR's electronic newsletter is published every month and includes research updates, resources, and is distributed to more than 4,000 people. OAR partners with two other autism organizations in the U.S. annually to host conferences featuring presentations on current research and research-based practices. The organization's program, Operation Autism, is a 24/7 web-based resource that supports U.S. military families as an online companion resource to "A Guide for Military Families." OAR's "Understanding Asperger Syndrome: A Professor's Guide" is a DVD designed to be used by college students with Asperger Syndrome to educate professors about the disorder and supports for success. The Schwallie Family Scholarship Program offers college and post-secondary vocational/technical training scholarships, $3,000 for one year, for persons with autism awarded via annual competition. OAR's Latino Outreach Program provides culturally adapted, Spanish, autism resources to the Latino community.
