Programs

NRS operates a confidential and anonymous 24-hour hotline, 365 days a year. The front line team of staff and volunteers receive 40 hours of training to provide non-judgmental, non-directive support. A database of over 13,000 youth and family agencies provides options for callers to access counseling, alternative housing, basic center/shelter services, alcohol/drug treatment, and child protective services. When youth call for assistance contacting their family or an agency, NRS facilitates a conference call. The front line team member stays on the line with the youth to help advocate in support of the youth. NRS offers a message service for youth who want to relay a message but are not prepared to speak with their parent. Through a partnership with Greyhound Lines, Inc., NRS helps to provide a free bus ticket home to help reunite youth with their families. Educators can receive a free copy of the NRS Runaway Prevention Curriculum, "Let’s Talk." NRS provides free educational and promotional material to individuals and organizations to distribute within their community. NRS’ website has three major goals: to direct calls to the hotline so that youth and families can receive individualized support and attention; to engage youth and families so they can receive information before a runaway episode happens; and to distribute information about NRS, youth and runaways to their communities.

For the fiscal year ended April 30, 2010, NRS's program expenses were:
