Programs

              

The Red Cross provides services to needy individuals through its disaster, health and safety, biomedical, armed forces, international services programs. The organization reports responding to about 70,000 disasters nationwide through its disaster services program. Most of these disasters are single family and apartment home fires. The Red Cross also provides education, training and products that enable people to prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters and life threatening emergencies. Furthermore, the Red Cross collects, processes, and distributes blood and blood products. It reports providing more than 40% of the nation’s blood supply. The organization also strives to ensure that service members, veterans and their families have worldwide, around-the-clock access to timely and reliable comfort and support.

Haiti Earthquake Relief Activities

              

In less than three months, the American Red Cross reports allocating more than $108 million on food and water, shelter, and health, water and sanitation, and livelihoods. 49% of the money has been for emergency relief, which includes food and relief supplies; 40% has been for shelter; and 6 percent has been for water and sanitation and health services; and 5% for livelihoods. Together with our partners in the global Red Cross network, the organization has provided assistance to more than 1.9 million people.
The American Red Cross plans to continue to support earthquake survivors in the months and years ahead. The Red Cross plans to utilize approximately 35-40 percent of the planned spending for the recovery period for shelter. The organization has highlighted that it will initially focus on providing transitional shelter for the most vulnerable people. This includes providing emergency shelter supplies to repair homes, as well as transitional shelters that are safe and robust.
To improve the water supply and sewage systems, the American Red Cross plans to spend approximately 20-25 percent over the next several years for water and sanitation projects in Haiti.
In addition, the American Red Cross reports that its multi-year spending plans places a growing emphasis on helping families rebuild their lives through cash grants, loans and other financial assistance that they can use to buy essential items and empower them as they rebuild their lives.

The Red Cross incurred joint costs of $4,000,000 for informational materials and activities that included fund raising materials. Of those costs, $2,200,000 was allocated to fund raising expenses, $1,400,000 was allocated to program expenses, and $400,000 was allocated to administrative expenses.
