Programs

              

As part of the Foundation's research infrastructure, its clinical resource centers provide patient care and education for persons with pulmonary illnesses and/or liver conditions associated with Alpha-1 Antirypsin (AAT). The Foundation also reports linking more than 150 Alpha-1 investigators worldwide, and funds an Alpha-1 research registry, DNA and tissue bank, and genetics laboratory, as well as academic and/or clinical research programs. The Foundation also organizes scientific meetings, conferences, workshops and symposia. Categories of grants and awards available from the Foundation for meritorious projects include clinical treatment, pilot and feasibility, postdoctoral research fellowship, and ethical, legal and social issues relating to AAT Deficiency. AAT screening kits are distributed through a partnership with the Florida Department of Health and the University of Florida. The Foundation also promotes awareness of AAT among the medical profession, with a primary focus of persuading high-risk individuals to undergo testing. In the arena of public policy, the Foundation monitors legislative and regulatory issues and stakes positions on such issues as new therapeutics, screening and detection, access to care, medical privacy, genetic discrimination, and blood product safety.
