Evaluation Conclusions

National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) meets the 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.

In reaching the conclusion that NOF meets the BBB charity standard (Standard 9) calling for total fund raising service expenses to not exceed 35% of total expenses, the BBB considered the following. NOF’s audited financial statements for the year ended December 31, 2008 show that total fund raising expenses were 43% of total expenses. However, the charity met this standard in the two previous fiscal years and this increased percentage for fund raising expenses is due, in part, to the impact of the economic recession on the charity’s revenue.

Programs

NOF's professional relations and education programs include developing and distributing osteoporosis educational materials to healthcare professionals, patients and the public; sponsoring meetings and workshops relating to osteoporosis prevention, identification and treatment; and sponsoring continuing medical education programs. NOF publishes two newsletters, “The Osteoporosis Report” for its membership and “Clinical Updates” for health professionals. NOF's Professional Partners Network (PPN) is a nationwide affiliation of health professionals in a network of affiliated hospitals/clinics and individual physicians. The PPN membership list is made available to the general public on NOF’s website. NOF has designated May as National Osteoporosis Awareness and Prevention Month and, as part of its campaign, NOF develops and disseminates information to both the public and the media to increase awareness of osteoporosis. Information is also provided directly to health fair sponsors, patients and their families. Additionally, NOF has 96 support groups in 32 states for patients and their families and operates an on-line support system called Linking Up. NOF advocates increased federal spending for osteoporosis research and bone health education, works with state legislatures to introduce prevention and education legislation and works to encourage health insurance companies to cover costs associated with bone density testing.

For the year ended December 31, 2008, NOF's program expenses were:
