Programs

amfAR supports research projects that explore approaches to untested hypotheses in all areas of research on HIV/AIDS, funding goal-oriented studies that often lack the preliminary data required for support from other grant-makers. amfAR identifies gaps in HIV/AIDS knowledge and provides funds that enable grantees and fellows to test the merits of new concepts or technologies that subsequently can be validated through large-scale studies. amfAR’s fellowships provide young investigators the opportunity to conduct original investigations under the guidance of experienced scientists and help ensure the long-term vitality of AIDS research. amfAR’s TREAT Asia (Therapeutics Research, Education, and AIDS Training in Asia) program is a network of clinics, hospitals, and research institutions working with civil society to ensure the safe and effective delivery of HIV/AIDS treatments throughout Asia and the Pacific. A second international program, the MSM Initiative, provides financial and technical support to community organizations working to reduce the spread and impact of HIV among men who have sex with men (MSM) in low- and middle-income countries. The organization's Public Policy program is engaged in efforts to secure necessary increases in funding for HIV/AIDS research, including vaccine, microbicide and cure-focused research; implementing an evidence-based, national HIV prevention strategy; expanding access to care and treatment; and protecting the civil rights of all people affected by HIV/AIDS. amfAR also publishes educational materials, maintains a website, and engages public figures, HIV/AIDS scientists, and policy makers in diverse efforts to communicate the need for continued research to develop new methods of prevention and treatment, and ultimately a cure. Some ($542,609 or 12%) of amfAR’s public policy and education and information programs are conducted in conjunction with informational materials that include fund raising appeals.
